GENERAL INFO
THIS SATURDAY:

THIS SATURDAY 14 & 12 MILES AND INFORMAL 6 MILES!!

FIT members get excited! This Saturday is the firts 14 miler of the Winter season! YAY! More than a Half Marathon distance! Please be sure to check the FIT Long Run Planning Checklist located under the links section.

Also, this Saturday we are splitting up between Full and Half groups! What does this mean? It means if you are training for a Half Marathon, you will be doing 12 miles, and if you are training for a full marathon, you will be doing 14 miles. 14 and 12 milers will start together and remain together for the most part of the run. Towards the end, we will split up and the 14 milers will just continue on for a couple more miles.

Athens participants will be doing an informal 6 miler meeting at 6:30 am. If you have missed a few Saturdays and would like to come back and you feel comfortable with this distance, please feel free to join us! You may not have a leader for your group, but you should know our route (from the park to the Clipper and Back) and there will be plenty of people out there!

SAFETY REMINDER!

Please remember to practice safety. If you use head phones, please have them only in one ear so the other ear is clear to hear what is going on around you. You need to be able to hear for cars and everything else to avoid accidents. Please do not run on the bike lane. Cross the streets at the light, keep a single file on the bridges and narrow sidewalks allowing others to go by, and if you feel overheated, use the beach showers! It feels great to get your head under the shower! :) Don’t forget to wear your FIT shirts and have fun everyone!

SEMINAR THIS SATURDAY:

MARATHON AND BEYOND Brought to us by Bob Becker

Join us this Saturday as Bob Becker, Palm 100 and Keys 100 Race director and ultra marathoner shares with us a little on the history of marathoning, talks about how marathons can enrich our lives in so many different ways, and shares some valuable tips from his personal running experiences including his recent experience in Greece. Great timing for Athens participants! Be sure to stay for some info!

Bob started his running career with Friends In Training several years ago. Since then, he has completed several marathons, 10 Ultra marathons including a 135 mile race in the desert, and much more! "TRAINING TIP OF THE WEEK:

DON’T LIMIT YOUR TRAINING TO JUST RUN/WALK, INCREASE YOUR KNOWLEDGE ON THE SPORT!!"

A big part of your training success is not just the physical training, but also increasing our training IQ :) Getting informed and educated on the sport of running and walking is a must if you want to be successful. How can you do this? Stay and participate in our seminars after the run/walks on Saturdays. Read a book on Running, Walking or something related to the sport. Do a research on any particular running topic you’d like to learn about, etc. Try to learn something new if not daily, at least weekly! You will be amazed at what this can do for you and for your training!

"My Success Story "

A special Friends In Training Success Story!

Last weekend was the Marine Corps Marathon! MCM (along with Chicago and NYC) is recognized as one of the best marathons to experience/participate in the US. It is a very unique race. From the great location in DC, to the Marines who do a fabulous job organizing it, it is one of those “must do” events in the Country. The challenge however for slower participants is, that there is a cut off time at mile 20, and you must be there by a certain time otherwise you risk not being able to finish.

This year, a group of courageous participants from group A, Norm, Cathy, Rita and Melanie decided to take on the challenge. They knew it wasn’t going to be easy, we coaches did too, but they were determined, focused, and highly motivated! Conveniently for them, this year, we decided to implement the now very popular “one: ones” group within group A.

This was the chance for them to work on their speed, become faster and experience new horizons! What a great opportunity FIT provided! These participants joined the One: one group at the beginning of the season and with lots of courage, determination and hard work, they were able to achieve their goal that seemed so difficult at the beginning of the season! YES! THEY DID IT!! They all completed the task at hand successfully, and they now have the Marine Corps Marathon under their belt! YAY! WAY TO GO GUYS!!!

Melanie and Rita had magnificent PR’s, Cathy and Norm also did fabulous! The emotions at the finish line were so strong that we could feel them over the phone. I was totally in tears! We were so happy for them! What an amazing accomplishment!

Norm, Melanie, Cathy and Rita, on behalf of your coaches, assistant coaches, and all your FIT friends, we would like to congratulate you on such an amazing job! You guys made us SO PROUD! Your hard work paid off! YOU DID IT!!

A special congratulation also goes out to Coach Audrey for her support to the One:Ones group during the fall season, and to FIT for creating opportunities to make these great life experiences possible for our members! Their success is our success. What a great success story! :)
